Right, tell that to the estimated 7 million Maya still living in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, etc. I don't think they read Guru and know they should be dead.
The end of the world in 2012 is yet another misinterpretation by the uneducated and hype from doomsayers. Remember Y2K and everything that might have happened then???
The Maya Long Calendar (one of their 3 calendars) has an end date of 12/21/12 (the same date as the December solstice) found on only one single known but incomplete inscription. The missing hieroglyphics are subject to wide speculation/interpretation depending on which scholar you believe. The "Long Count" date marks the end of that calendar, or a "Baktun" period...and the beginning of a new one. Baktuns are the fifth placemark in the Long Count and the upcoming date in 2012 marks the movement from 12 (12.19.19.19.19) to 13 (13.0.0.0.0). Basically, it's like an odometer...when it reaches all 9's, it rolls over and restarts. People have focused on the end date of this particular Maya cycle rather than the start date of their new cycle. They celebrate every new cycle. Why celebrate if it's to be the end of the world?
OP: you and your gf believe what you want. When Dec 2012 nears, Christmas shopping is at your discretion...

1. With all the crap governing nuclear weapons I don't REALLY see this as a WORLD ending event, a few countries wiped maybe.
2. H1N1 is old news, however a disease apocalypse is VERY likely as humans continue to devolve.

What I do believe is that on December 21, 2012, the age of Aquarius will begin. The planets and the Sun will then be aligned towards the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. Use your mind to figure out what will happen after that.

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

We are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.
If you all stop imagining 2012 it will not happen....

I actually want it to be something like the knowing.
That way we all dont FREAKOUT when the world ends...it happens bit by bit and we kill ourselves.
Yay?

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane -
Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn -
world serves its own needs, regardless of your own needs. Feed it up a knock,
speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height,
down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government for
hire and a combat site. Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies
breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered
crop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its
own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the
reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
light, feeling pretty psyched.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign tower. Slash and burn,
return, listen to yourself churn. Lock him in uniform and book burning,
blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle,
light a motive. Step down, step down. Watch a heel crush, crush. Uh oh,
this means no fear - cavalier. Renegade and steer clear! A tournament,
a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives
and I decline.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide. Mount St. Edelite.
Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic,
slam, but neck, right? Right.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine...
(It's time I had some time alone)

Food for thought
An asteroid could be plowing its way through our atmosphere right now and no one would know.

If it does, oh well. If it doesn't, oh well.
The Mayan thing isn't entirely accurate though... it is just the end of their calendar cycle, not the end of time as we know it.
